| Description: |
The community is located on the southern end of Elcho Island in North East Arnhem land. Elcho Island is at the southern end of the Wessell Island group, and is bounded on the western side by the Arafura Sea and on the east by Cadell Strait. Elcho Island is 550 km east of Darwin and 150 km north west of Nhulunbuy. Apart from the weekly freight barge service, Galiwinku is accessed primarily by air. There is an all weather, bitumised air strip located at the community. Travel time to Nhulunbuy: 30-45 minutes, to Darwin: 1.5 hours. |
